Role of P.C.C. in Paint application
P.C.C is used in Paint Industry due to its Chemical Purity and High refractive index as an effective extender for TiO2. Due to its Narrow Particle Size Distribution the PCC disperses efficiently and counteracts flocculation of TiO2 to achieve maximum light scattering. PCC improves dry hiding by providing filler / air interfaces with significant refractive index difference.
The special properties of P.C.C result from its lower density, Calcite structure, small particle size, high degree of purity & brightness thus effecting good dipersibility and % reduction in TiO2 for similar whiteness and properties.
A basic distinction is given below
| Properties | Advantage |
| Density | Increase in volume and Antisettling property. |
| Particle shape | Higher Opacity. |
| Brightness | Improves degree of whiteness & partial replacement of TiO2. |
| Particle size | Best Opacity, Hiding power & Light Scattering. Facilitates Easy Dispersion. |
| Oil Absorption | High hiding power at low amount of binder. |
| Flowpoint | Allows % reducation in thickener |
PCC is normally used in combination with TiO2 to produce highly economical dispersion paints without which the TiO2 % would have to be significantly increased to achieve similar results. For use in varied type of emulsion paints generally PCC is used upto - 15 to 20 % for interior paints and 10 to 15 % for gloss paints and exterior paints.
